Eating Paleo in Houston

Eric and I were so burned out a tired of having the same dishes over and over again. I love to cook, however I definitely got into a rut of making our easy go to dishes that are convenient, fast and easy. Lately, we have been working so much that our groceries have been going bad before we have a chance to cook them. Our lifesavers have been Perfect Fit Meals and My Fit Foods. It is sad for me to say, but we have been eating their dishes so often we were so tired of them. Thanks to ya'll we have branched out recently and have found a few new favorites!

Awhile back I posted on my Facebook wall asking for people to suggest their favorite Paleo friendly places in Houston. We have been super adventurous lately and have spoiled our taste buds with some of the below tasty treats!

Here are a few:
Bayou City Seafood - Grilled shrimp and steamed veggies

Thai Gourmet - chicken curry and steamed veggies

Georgia's buffet- Omelet bar, apricot chicken, grassfed beef meat loaf, salad bar

HEB - orange plate special, extra chicken breast

Ziggy's Bar and Grill - Grilled Atlantic Salmon with Veggies du Jour

Zoe's Kitchen - Shrimp Kabobs - no pilaf, ask for extra veggies

Pei Wei - Spicy Shrimp Salad (gluten free version, hold the rice sticks

- Thai Coconut Curry - no rice

- Steamed broccoli with chicken or beef - with a little spicy mustard (this is my favorite!)

Thai Cottage - Shrimp on the Grill or Tiger Cry - no rice ask for extra veggies
The Egg and I – Steak & Eggs with a side of fruit, hold the toast and potatoes

Kim Son Cafe - they have a few sushi rolls that are rice free, I have only tried one, but all look yummy! Be very careful here, many of their dishes contain MSG!

PLEASE if you have any other recommendations post them here!!!

Smash your SCALE! "Lean" does not mean "Light"

Throughout our gyms nutrition challenge I consistently hear “how come the scale isn’t moving?"
Checklist:
1) Are you eating lean meat, fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds?
2) Are you working out consistently?
3) Are you eating enough?
4) Are you drinking enough water?

If you are doing all of the above, chances are you are losing fat and gaining muscle, so the scale may not move, but in fact go up!

If you are losing size, and getting smaller, and know for a fact that you are losing fat, but you are still hung up on what your scale says, do yourself a favor, throw away your scale, and do it now. If you can't throw it away, donate it!

Our culture is so fixated on weight, it is no wonder many women find themselves trapped by the numbers on their bathroom scales.

Women especially, but increasingly more men, are obsessed with weight loss, not fat loss. When you care about weight loss, then you’ll do some stupid things that will cause you to lose more muscle and gain more fat. Example: stop eating or eat less = not the right answer.

I love watching the Biggest Loser, however I wish they were not so focused on lbs. Each week contestants get on the scale and compete to see who lost a higher percentage of bodyweight. Since the contestants are so dramatically big (some of them carrying 300 pounds of extra fat), weight loss is highly correlated with fat loss in the beginning. But, once they get nearer to their goal weight, it gets brutal.

The reason being, they are gaining muscle at the same time, and that makes weight loss hard. They can still be losing fat at the same rate they always were on the show, but because it’s based on percentage of body weight, and their overall fat levels are now lower, they can’t possibly lose 2% per week forever!

What’s wrong with all of this? Weight loss is not the same as fat loss. Period. It’s only marginally related. You can lose both water and muscle at a much faster rate than you can lose fat. And guess what, you’re body would rather you did.

Scale weight only tells you how much you weigh. It doesn’t tell you if you have a high body fat percentage, a large amount of muscle mass, strong bones (which weight more than weak bones), or if your carrying a lot of water. (Some women can gain a solid 10 pounds of water during their period – they didn’t get fatter. It’s just water, and it goes away when they are off their period.)

Since muscle weighs a lot more than fat, then you can lose a lot of fat, gain a little muscle and not change your scale weight AT ALL.

This is common. Especially among people who have not seriously worked out before. If you have never done any serious weight training, expect to gain about 10 pounds of bone-mass alone. This won’t show in the mirror. You’re bones have been hollow for a long time, and now that you have been lifting weights, they are filling in. This is a GREAT thing. But, it makes you heavier.

People associate “lean” with “light”. When in fact it is usually the opposite. Athletes are the leanest and strongest people around. They are also heavy. If you are both small and light, you are either under 5’3”, have a remarkably small bone structure, or you are “skinny fat” and you need to lift more weight. "Skinny fat" is not pretty and only looks good with clothes on.

Throw away your scale. Start paying more attention how you feel and how your clothes fit (and maybe a tape measure around your waist), and be more of an intellectual about your body composition. I promise you, you’ll be happier AND healthier.

New Year New You - Echo vs Lambo

This weekend CFWH hosted the Whole9, and we discussed so many amazing ways to inspire people to eat healthy. In my opinion anyone who walks into the gym is already on the right track to becoming a healthier person and obviously cares about their health. As a Crossfit community and gym we care about each other and know that even though sometimes fellow crossfitters may act like they don't care about nutrition, or think they can eat whatever they want and it doesn't affect them, I know better. I know most people don't want to have stomach issues, high blood pressure, or heart trouble now or 30 years down the road. Whether you know it or not at one point in your life you may realize that you are not as skinny, as flexible, as strong, or energetic as you once remember. So why not make life easy on yourself? Start NOW by doing the #1 MOST IMPORTANT thing for your long term health and eat right. It is really very easy, eat fruits, vegetables, lean meats, nuts and seeds, little starch, and nothing processed. Yes, grains are processed! This is about as simple as we can get.

Think about a high performance sports car, you would not put regular unleaded fuel in a Lamborghini, you would put premium. Your body is the same, are you a Toyota Echo or a Lamborghini?

So that being said, go home and clean out your fridge and pantry. Get rid of any negative foods that are going to prevent you from being a "Lamborghini".
Negative Foods: anything processed, dairy, grains, starches (potatoes/corn etc.), sugar

Next, go to the grocery store and stock up on positive foods that are going to make you healthier, I have a list shown below of my typical grocery list.

Don't forget, always stay around the stores perimeter!!

Paleo Grocery List
Tuna
Pork Tender loins
Olive Oil
Balsamic Vinegar
Lime Juice / lemon juice

Almond milk / Coconut milk
Strawberries / Blackberries /cherries
Pecans / almonds / walnuts

The Truth about Coconut

Who does not like coconut? It is a great way to kill a sweet craving, can be a dairy replacement, is used to create so many delicious paleo dishes, and the shell is a natural cup!

Coconut does not contain a high amount of saturated fat, however about half of it is lauric acid that does not raise cholesterol level, it actually strengthens your immune system.

Coconut products help normalize blood lipids and protect against damage to the liver by alcohol and other toxins, it can play a role in preventing kidney and gall bladder disease, and is associated with improved blood sugar and insulin control and therefore the prevention and management of diabetes. It also has antiviral, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. Superficially, coconut oil helps strengthen mineral absorption, which is important for healthy teeth and bones, and also helps improve the condition and appearance of the scalp, hair and skin when ingested or topically applied.

Ethnic Sections of your local grocery offer the most authentic products at the cheapest prices. Don't be fooled into buying the "light" versions that are only watered down.

Random Fact

Water inside a coconut is so sterile that it was sometimes used in place of glucose in I.V. solutions for wounded soldiers in World War II.
